Established in 1936 as 'IRWIN HOSPITAL' with bed strength of 320, Lok Nayak Hospital is a premier public hospital under Govt. of NCT of Delhi with present bed strength of 1400. During these 6 decades of its existence this hospital has grown enormously in its size and volume so as to cope with the growing needs of the ever-increasing population of this capital city. The catchments area of this Hospital includes the most thickly populated old Delhi areas including Jama Masjid and Trans Yamuna Area. However, with the opening of G.T.B. Hospital, the pressure from the population of Trans Yamuna Area has reduced. On the other hand, patients attending this hospital from the neighbouring states and other parts of the city have increased manifolds. This shows the popularity of the hospital in terms of various services provided by it. The hospital provides the general medical care encompassing all the departments like Medicine, Surgery, Obstt. & Gynae, Paediatrics, Burns & Plastic etc. It also provides specialized services like Dialysis, Lithotrepsy, Respiratory Care, Plastic Surgery and others also provides the tertiary care connected with the National Programmes including mainly family welfare maternity and child health care.

The hospital provides various services in health care of the public. These are (a) Casualty/Emergency (b) Out patient (c) indoor care and (d) investigating and other ancillary services. In Casualty/Emergency services; 3,60,516 were attended to above 40,000 admission and 18179 operations done on emergency basis. Total cases attending the OPD were 10,25,961. Total numbers of admissions were 64,572 during the year. Extensive Investigating Services were provided including 4.5 lacs investigations in pathology lab. and over 6.1 lac investigations in biochem. Lab., 24,733 x-rays were done and around 34,732 Ultrasound and 12,850 CT Scans were undertaken. More than 2737 MRIs done since inception in September 2001. Over 14132 units of blood were issued by the Blood Bank after screening the units various infections including HIV.
